Elyria, Ohio is a mid-sized city in Lorain County, serving as the county seat and a key suburb in the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area. Located about 23 miles southwest of downtown Cleveland, it’s part of the industrial and residential corridor along Lake Erie, with easy access to the city while offering a more affordable, small-city feel.
Founded in 1817 by Heman Ely, who built a log cabin, dam, gristmill, and sawmill on 12,500 acres of wilderness. The city was named Elyria (after him, with a nod to the ancient region of Illyria in Greek). It became the Lorain County seat in 1822, incorporated as a village in 1833 (with ~800 residents), and grew into a bustling town by the mid-1800s thanks to mills, agriculture, trade, and early industry. By the time Ely died in 1852, it had churches, stores, newspapers, and over 1,500 people. It boomed as a manufacturing hub (iron/steel, bricks, machinery, rubber) in the late 19th/early 20th centuries, peaking around the mid-20th century before typical Rust Belt declines, but with ongoing revitalization in historic areas.
Cascade Park (part of Lorain County Metro Parks): A standout spot with dramatic waterfalls along the Black River, hiking trails, picnic areas, and scenic overlooks—great for nature escapes right in the city.
