While the demand for jobs in the medical field is only growing, some job hunters may be experiencing difficulty when looking for a new position. Often these difficulties occur through no fault of your own skills or experience—and can be fixed simply by making a few minor adjustments to the way that you’re conducting your job search. Whether you don’t have quite the right keywords in your application for the position you’re seeking, or you’re applying to positions that don’t really line up with your experience, a few small tweaks may be all you need to get you where you want to go.
Here are a few tips to get you started:
Personalize Your Resume
Tailoring your resume to each job posting can be make-or-break for job hunters in any industry these days. Potential employers are looking to find the exact details they listed in their job posting in the applicant’s resume, so make sure that you customize your resume for each job that you apply to. Your resume should be less about you, and more about how your experience makes you the correct person for that exact position.
Set a Goal
Don’t cast your net too wide—only apply to jobs that are relevant to your goals and experience. While it might feel counterintuitive to apply to fewer jobs rather than more, you’ll have a better chance at securing a position if you focus your efforts on those jobs that align directly with your past experience and future goals. Set your sights on the position you want, and don’t apply to anything else.
Volunteer Your Time
If you’re strapped for connections, volunteering your time at a clinic or other nearby medical facility may help you network with someone who needs your skills. Volunteering can be a great way to practice your skills and give back to the community, while still putting yourself out there and connecting with people who may be able to connect you to a full-time position.
Pro tip: Serving your community freely can also be a way to combat burnout—as volunteering has been linked to “enhanced longevity, higher functional ability and lower rates of depression,” according to the Corporation for National Community Service.

That’s a good idea to make the focus of your resume your experience. I would think that would be what most employers would be looking for. I’ll have to make sure to do that as well as working with a recruiter if I decide to get a job in healthcare.
